The website traffic myth

Where is all my website traffic?
Is this a question that you find yourself often asking when you look at your website statistics? Many people believe that if you have a website, all the millions of web surfers will somehow just find it. They feel that they’ve invested the money to have their fantastic website in place and wonder why no one is visiting it.
It is true that by having a website, the probability increases that potential customers will find you on the Internet. However, it is a myth that just having a website will draw thousands of new clients and double your business overnight. The website by itself is simply a marketing tool. Having a well constructed, easily navigated, professional website is a step in the right direction; however, getting traffic to your website is a multifaceted process. Let’s take a look at the process and some simple, yet effective ways to increase that much-desired traffic to your website.
Since your website is just one of the many tools that you have at your disposal, why not allow your various marketing tactics to reinforce each other?
The first step is to include your website address on all of your other marketing initiatives. This could include business cards, brochures, flyers, newspaper ads, phone directories, TV, radio, direct mail, signage, etc. In the case of most marketing materials, space and time is valuable. Instead of trying to cram in multiple messages and pitches and risking negative ad effectiveness due to clutter and small print, communicate your value proposition (why the customer needs to buy from you) and then point them to the website for more details. This allows you the ability to effectively communicate your message to them without worrying about space constraints. An important thing to keep in mind is that your website should be constantly updated with new and fresh content. This will result in repeat visitors as well as help increase your search engine placements.
This brings us to the next method of acquiring more traffic: search engine marketing. This is a process that is often overlooked by the marketing departments of many Atlantic Canadian businesses. Your website can be targeted specifically to the web surfer that is looking for your expertise in your region. You can’t get any more direct than that.
You can market to a very specific territory, or to a broad region that you would like to generate qualified leads. For example, if you do a search for your industry in a specific location, there will be a list of results that may or may not include your company. If your company is not in the list of results, your website may not be properly optimized.
However, this can be changed. By properly optimising your website for search engine compatibility and having your website submitted to the major search engines on a continuous basis, you will steadily climb in rankings to a much more favourable position. This type of marketing is extremely inexpensive and can be very effective. Proper search engine optimization and marketing techniques can become quite complex, so you may need to enlist the help of a knowledgeable friend or professional web-marketing firm.
So if you are asking yourself, “Where is all my website traffic?” just remember there is lots of web traffic to be tapped into out there, but you have to maximize your website exposure using all the tools at your disposal. By applying these simple basic techniques, you’ll be pleasantly surprised as you watch your website traffic increase.
